Riviera, San Clemente
An original piece of mid-century architecture, the client wanted to preserve the nature of this period piece while changing it to accommodate a more modern way of living and create a place that the young family could grow closer together.

True to the period there were specific rooms for different functions, so the first task would be to open it up and create a space that would be more connected both internally and to the outside. With a beautiful view of the ocean and being situated in Southern California, the original home had very little connection to both. The creation of a wrap around wood deck and bifolding doors gave the home a connection to the outdoors and removed the threshold of inside and outside.
While walls were removed and new openings installed the design objective was to create the feeling that it was originally designed that way. So a continuation of materials and a new material palette that complimented the existing was chosen to create a harmonious relationship between the old and new.
A new master suite was created with the privatizing of a courtyard which allowed the bedroom to flow to the outdoors and fills both the bedroom and bathroom with natural light and ventilation. A slider door in the shower and an outdoor bathtub give the opportunity to be bathing outside all year round as the home caters for the easy flow off the beach and into the home.
Only steps away from the beach and with the new connection to the outdoors this home has become a place where the family can enjoy the benefit of living in true period piece that has evolved to accommodate a modern beach lifestyle.
